Depression Therapy in NYC

Compassionate, culturally attuned depression treatment for adults, in person in Manhattan and virtual across New York.

Who is depression therapy for?

If you are looking for depression therapy in NYC, Resonance Psychology offers warm, evidence-based care for adults, both in person at our Flatiron and Gramercy office and virtually across New York State. We are a boutique practice led by Dr. Angela Gwak, a Columbia University-trained, NY and NJ licensed Asian American psychologist with 19 years of clinical experience, and our focus is helping you feel like yourself again.

Depression does not always look like sadness. Sometimes it looks like getting through the day on autopilot, feeling numb, or wondering why things that used to matter no longer do. Maybe you’re:

  • Making it through your workday but feeling empty when you get home

  • Sleeping too much or too little, and never quite feeling rested

  • Carrying a heavy sense of guilt, worthlessness, or being a burden

  • Pushing through high-functioning days while quietly struggling underneath

  • Feeling disconnected from your family, your culture, or your own sense of who you are

Our Integrative Approach to Depression

There is no single right way to treat depression, so we do not force one. Dr. Gwak draws on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help you notice and shift the thought patterns that keep you stuck, psychodynamic work to understand the deeper roots of how you feel, and a relational-cultural lens that takes your relationships, family, and cultural context seriously. In practice, this feels less like a clinical protocol and more like a real conversation that gradually helps things make sense.

Therapy here can help you:

  • Understand what is driving your depression, not just manage the symptoms

  • Build practical tools for the days that feel heavy

  • Reconnect with the people, work, and parts of yourself that matter to you

  • Feel understood in the context of your culture, family, and identity

What Do Sessions Look Like?

Sessions are a steady, private space where you can slow down and be honest without performing. Early on, we focus on understanding your story and what you want to feel differently. Over time, we work at a pace that fits you, blending insight with practical steps. We see adults in person at our Flatiron and Gramercy office and virtually across New York State, with virtual-only sessions for clients in New Jersey and Florida.

Our Therapists are Here to Support You

Resonance Psychology is a boutique practice, which means care here is personal, not one-size-fits-all. Dr. Angela Gwak brings 19 years of clinical experience and a deep focus on BIPOC, Asian American, and multicultural identity, and works alongside Esther Eng, MHC-LP. We welcome your full self, your background, your family story, and your identities, into the room.

Insurance and Getting Started

We are out-of-network only. You pay for your session upfront, and we provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance for possible partial reimbursement, depending on your plan. For fees, please contact us directly. The simplest first step is a free 15 to 20 minute consultation call, a relaxed way to ask questions and see whether we are a good fit before booking a first session.
