Grief Counseling in NYC

When loss changes who you are.

Grief is bigger than bereavement

Grief counseling in NYC at Resonance Psychology supports adults through loss that reaches beyond bereavement, including the end of relationships, shifts in identity, and the quieter losses that come with immigration and bicultural life. We are a boutique practice in Manhattan offering culturally attuned care, in person and virtual across New York.

Grief is not only about death. It is what we feel when something we counted on is gone: a marriage or friendship that ended, a version of ourselves we had to leave behind, a home country, a language, a sense of belonging in two cultures at once. These losses are real, even when the people around you do not name them as grief.

Maybe you’re:

  • Mourning a relationship, a marriage, or a friendship that ended

  • Carrying the loss of a parent, partner, or someone close to you

  • Grieving the home, country, or community you left through immigration

  • Feeling the distance between who you were raised to be and who you are becoming

  • Holding losses your family does not talk about, across generations

Our approach to grief and loss

We meet your grief without rushing it. The clinical team at Resonance Psychology led by Dr. Angela Gwak draws on relational, psychodynamic, and culturally grounded work, paying close attention to how family, migration, and identity shape the way you mourn. There is no single right way to grieve, and we hold space for the versions of loss that often go unseen.

Grief work here can help you:

  • Make room for loss without feeling like you have to move on before you are ready

  • Understand grief that is tied to identity, culture, and belonging

  • Find language for losses your family or community may have kept quiet

  • Reconnect with yourself and the people who matter, at your own pace

What does grief work look like in session?

Sessions are unhurried and led by what you are carrying. Some days we sit with the weight of it; other days we look at how grief is showing up in your relationships, your body, or your sense of who you are. Over time, therapy becomes a steady place to feel what is real and to slowly find your footing again.
